Hi Sam,

In the future, if you have your laptop or other personal items sitting out on a table and it looks like people want to use that space, you can always just communicate with them, "here let me grab that so you can use that area", it wouldn't lead to any awkward situations and would allow you to move your belongings out of the way to a safer location while acknowledging that they want to use the space.  It wouldn't imply that you don't trust them, but would also not put your own personal belongings in harms way in that situation.
